Royal Theatre Les Cœurs de Bois offers Hans-Christian Andersen’s magical tale “The Nightingale”, a free puppet show presented at the Maison du Folklore during Winter Wonders.
The story tells the tale of “how the Emperor of China, a refined man who loved to be surrounded by artworks, hears of the Nightingale, a bird he had not heard of before. Hearing that the song of the bird is extraordinary, the curious and impatient Emperor demands that it should be brought before him instantly. The Chamberlain in charge of finding it to bring it to his master interrogates everyone, from the highest dignitary to the humblest servant…”
Félix Bonjean adapted the Danish author’s 19th century tale. Andersen wrote many travel tales, plays, poetry, novels and 164 children tales that are also aimed at adults through their poetic imagination or hidden moral or philosophical red thread behind the anecdote.
Henri Abbing, a Dutch puppeteer who also designed and made the puppets, stages the show played by Sébastien Kempenaers, a graphic designer/actor who has moved to the backstage of the puppet theatre 6 years ago. Marceline Tribel produces the show.
